A striking 19th century Grand Tour bronze inkwell of architectural form, richly decorated with entwined serpent handles, classical garlands, pierced covers and ornate paw feet. The design draws inspiration from Greco-Roman antiquities and the fascination with classical art and archaeology that fuelled the Grand Tour market throughout the 19th century.

The twin snake handles are particularly impressive, coiling dramatically at either end and terminating in finely detailed serpent heads. The body is adorned with neoclassical swags and cast ornament, while the original pierced hinged covers remain in place. The central compartment and both ink wells are present, although the original glass or ceramic well liners are no longer included. This is a common loss and does not detract from its decorative impact as a desk piece or cabinet object.

The bronze has developed an attractive aged patina with light surface wear consistent with age. Please study the photographs carefully as they form part of the description.
