A handsome antique Victorian writing slope veneered in beautifully figured burr walnut, retaining its working lock and key and fitted interior. Portable writing slopes such as this were an essential travel and correspondence accessory throughout the 19th century, allowing letters and documents to be written and stored securely both at home and while travelling.

The case displays particularly attractive burr walnut veneers with rich figuring across the lid and sides, complemented by a vacant mother-of-pearl escutcheon to the top. Opening the slope reveals the traditional angled writing surface covered in deep burgundy felt, together with compartments for ink bottles, pens, correspondence, and writing accessories. One original glass inkwell remains present.

The lock functions correctly and the key is included, a feature often missing from surviving examples. The writing slope displays age-related wear, marks, small losses, and imperfections consistent with its age and use, all contributing to its authentic antique character.
