A wonderfully atmospheric antique Afghan Baluch hand-knotted wool rug with a bold tribal geometric design in deep madder red, indigo blue, aubergine and warm tobacco brown tones. The piece features a striking repeating stepped medallion pattern with highly graphic angular motifs and beautifully saturated natural-looking colours that work exceptionally well in contemporary interiors. The darker palette and strong geometry give it a very current “collected old world” feel that fits perfectly with the ongoing revival of antique tribal textiles in younger interior design circles.

Hand-knotted with a soft low wool pile and attractive age-related wear that gives the rug excellent texture and character. The close-up images show the quality of the weave and the lovely abrash variation through the field. Likely mid 20th century with a good chance of being earlier, and very much in the classic Baluch tribal tradition from the Afghanistan / Khorasan region. The compact size makes it especially versatile as a hallway rug, bedside rug, studio rug or layering piece in a maximalist, bohemian or rustic interior.

Overall good antique condition with even wear consistent with age and use. Fringes and edges remain present and the rug displays beautifully.
